Moon Musings - September

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
— Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

In late August, we (Sharen and Karen) went to Taos Expressive Arts Retreat for Women, held at the Mable Dodge Luhan House in Taos, New Mexico.  This retreat, led by the amazing Pamela Underwood and co-facilitator Joanna Waters, was both restorative and transformational in ways that we are still discovering.

From Karen:
I saw this Taos Art Retreat for Women as a chance to spend time with Sharen and to immerse into a creative experience for 7 days. I enjoyed working with mixed media techniques that I had not done for many years and creating a very personal piece of art that I love. This retreat allowed me to step outside of our everyday routine and devote all of my time and life energy to imagining and then creating art. It was amazing!

From Sharen:
This retreat was an opportunity to create art from my heart and soul, and an opportunity to connect to the land and energy that is Taos and see its reflection in my art.  It was an opportunity to spend time with Karen creating and connecting to our art and our hearts. It was seven days filled with joyful creative energy. I absolutely loved it!

We relay this to you, not only to recommend Pamela and Joanna, but also to remind you to invest in yourself.  Leaving our charming coastal gallery for a week was not easy, but we knew it was in loving hands, and carving out time to go and just be with ourselves, each other, and our art practices were vital in a way that reconnects us to who we are at the deepest, most authentic level.

You don’t have to travel to Taos to reconnect.  Take a quiet afternoon and burn your to-do list.  Just be.  Nurture that part of yourself.  You won’t regret it.

September Austin Street ArtWalk - Sept 14th!

Silversmithing has a plethora of techniques that continue to intrigue Lori. She enjoys working with silver, brass, and copper, and she looks forward to expanding her knowledge in working with a softer metal such as gold. Lori is currently learning a repousse stamping technique using hand-forged steel metal stamps.

For Emily’s deeply reverential work, botanical presses are made from various marine and coastal plant species collected in Texas waters. For her framed pieces, the plants are manipulated in artful styles to evoke natural movement and beauty from what is an often overlooked, but integral, subject matter of marine ecosystems.

Art Prompt

Sit with yourself in silence for 30 minutes, and just observe where your mind goes.  Obligations? Nope.  Redirect it by asking it to go to your most authentic expression. Grocery list? Nope. Redirect it by asking it to go to your most authentic expression. Social media calling? Nope. Redirect by asking it to go to your most authentic expression.  Once you are able to sweep out all of the noise, ask yourself what your dream project would be, and let it begin to live!
