Moon Musings - March
Moon Tidings - Individuality
This month we want you to release yourself from relentlessly searching for your artistic individuality. Your individuality will emerge when you stop pressuring yourself and allow yourself to play. Play! Play with your art supplies with no expectation of perfection. Let one idea lead to another and then another. Before you know it, you’re discovering what you prefer and what pulls you gravitationally. Assemble those pieces, created while playing, and evaluate what they have in common. Do you seem to prefer a certain subject or technique? A certain color palette? Remember this. You have your own heartbeat and soul, so you’re already an individual. There’s nothing you need to do to make it true. It’s already true.
MOW Wow!
We’ve been nominated!!! Our gallery, at a mere six months of age, is nominated for the Local’s List in The Bend Magazine. We are so grateful that the specific vision we set forth in the founding principles of this gallery are resonating with you. People come in and use words like “magical” and “enchanting,” and they see the beauty in the works of our hand-selected artisans. We could never ask for more…except that we are. If we make it to the next round, which would be the Top 5, we will humbly ask for your vote starting April 7th to April 28th.
And it gets even better! Our own Vivian Rood is also nominated in the Ceramicist category!
Artist Spotlights
This month we want to focus on our own Debra Lalumia and Elizabeth Jones!
Debra has a positively magnetic watercolor style, and her works never fail to impress. See Debra’s delightful “Leon and Lester” and the enchanting “Windows and Doors” below and come by the gallery to get them before they’re gone!
Leon and Lester
I love to use different techniques and styles in my paintings and watercolor lends itself to doing just that. In this painting of the two longhorns, Leon and Lester, I painted them in a realistic style, showing more detail and form on them along with capturing the late afternoon sun on the landscape and creating this late day mood. Perhaps they are meandering to the barn or just enjoying the late day sun? You get to decide.
Windows and Doors
This piece is an imaginary scene made up of various “windows and doors” from different buildings. I have a huge cache of images/photos and when I'm looking for inspiration sometimes I'll sift through them. This particular day I honed in on all the beautiful and different features of these building apertures. I began by simply drawing many of them at random in my sketchbook until I saw a composition begin to form. I liked all of them together and I decided I would use as many as I felt I could get away with but not overdo it on a single wall. I painted this using a fairly impressionistic style; not a lot of detail; loose brush strokes that imply the subject. Then I created the light and shadow on the wall and voila!
If texture intrigues you, we have the artist for you. Elizabeth’s explorations of texture through cold wax and oil are designed to create a field trip for your eyes every time you look at one of her pieces.
Ancestor
I’m fascinated with origin stories. My goal here was another exercise in duality. I set out to create a serene and seemingly timeless presence who nevertheless evidences the complexity of existence by the texture on the skin.
Blue Gradient
The blue piece began with a loose destination in mind. I wanted to create work that existed within a particular duality. I wanted it to feel serene from a distance, but for it also to become more complex the closer one looked. I hope I achieved that. Someone once told me that she could let their eyes play and roam over the textures in the painting for days, and she felt that she could see something different each time she looked. That feedback made my year!
We’ve been working on something special, and we can finally share a bit of outstanding news with you!
The Art Walk is coming back! Our founders, Sharen and Karen, began a mission to revitalize the Rockport Art Walk, and the idea has been warmly and enthusiastically embraced! Winding its way through historic Austin Street, the Art Walk will be held on the second Saturday of each month, beginning in April. Big thanks to Rockport Center for the Arts for being the title sponsor!
The Art Walk is a self-guided walking tour of galleries, artist studios and exhibitions spaces, both commercial and non-profit, along with alternative art venues, such as cafes and shops. Many participating locations also offer live music, refreshments, and opportunities for artists and collectors to meet!
Art Walk supports our vibrant artistic culture and connects you to this diverse network of places where you can view and purchase original art, meet local vendors, listen to amazing music, sample delicious food, and generally enjoy an amazing time! More details will come, complete with a map, but for now…mark your calendar!
Art Prompt!
Draw or paint your mood! Feeling peaceful? What color is that? Feeling frustrated? What color is that? What are brush strokes like when representing frustration or peacefulness? Feeling hopeful? What color is hope? What does it look like?
